What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts with others, and experiences the world. Because it is a "spectrum" disorder, it affects each individual differently and to varying degrees.
Common characteristics may include challenges with:
- Social skills
- Repetitive behaviors
- Differences in sensory processing
The goal of therapy is not to "cure" autism but to support individuals in developing skills that help them navigate their environment and achieve their personal goals.
Does my child need to be diagnosed with autism to receive ABA therapy?
While ABA therapy is most commonly associated with autism spectrum disorder, a formal autism diagnosis is not always required. ABA can be effective for children facing various behavioral and developmental challenges.
What exactly is ABA therapy and how does it differ from other types of therapy?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific, evidence-based therapy focused on understanding how behavior works and how it is affected by the environment.
- Other therapies often focus primarily on talking or emotional exploration.
- ABA uses data-driven techniques to teach new skills and reduce challenging behaviors in a structured way.
Our approach is play-based and child-led, embedding learning into natural, fun activities. The core difference is our focus on observable behaviors and using reinforcement to create positive, measurable change.
How long does ABA therapy last?
The duration of ABA therapy is highly individualized and depends on each child's unique needs, goals, and rate of progress. Some children may receive focused treatment for a shorter period to address specific skills, while others with more comprehensive needs may benefit from services for several years.
Our clinical team regularly reviews progress with your family to ensure the therapy remains effective and adjusts the treatment plan as your child meets their goals.
How frequent are ABA therapy sessions?
Session frequency is determined by the clinical recommendations in your child’s individualized treatment plan. In general:
- For early learners or those with significant needs, a more intensive schedule may be recommended to maximize learning opportunities.
- For school-age children or those needing to focus on specific skills, a less intensive schedule that allows for therapy between school learning may be more appropriate.
We work with your family to find a schedule that is both clinically effective and fits your life.
Will insurance cover my child’s ABA therapy services?
Most major health insurance plans provide coverage for ABA therapy services for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Coverage can vary significantly between plans, and requirements like pre-authorizations, deductibles, and co-pays are common.
As of February 2026, Catalyst Behavior Solutions’ Texas locations will also accept Medicaid coverage.
Our intake team will work with you to verify your benefits and understand your plan’s specific coverage for ABA services before you begin.
